PGY2 Pain Management & Palliative Care Residency

Company: The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center
Location: Columbus
Posted on: December 5, 2019

Job Description:

Purpose PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available. The Ohio State University/Optum Hospice Pharmacy Services PGY2 Pain Management & Palliative Care Residency is a multi-site program offering patient care experiences in outpatient and acute inpatient care settings, as well as the opportunity to earn a teaching certificate through classroom experiences at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. Graduates of the program will be well prepared to provide pharmaceutical care for pain, palliative, and hospice patients in both inpatient and outpatient practice settings and to conduct clinical practice research. Residency Sites The PGY2 Pain and Palliative Care residency program offers two resident positions, one each at two different primary clinical practice sites. The preceptors at both sites work together to ensure residents gain similar core competencies in pain, palliative care and hospice with cross-training at both practice sites.

  • One position is primarily located at Optum Hospice Pharmacy Services. This residency track focuses on developing the resident’s knowledge in the management of pain and other symptoms of terminal diseases in the setting of a large hospice pharmacy services provider with patients residing in both inpatient and community hospice and palliative settings across the nation. The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC) serves as the secondary clinical practice site, providing exposure to palliative care and pain management in a large academic medical center.
  • One position is primarily located at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center James Cancer Hospital. This residency track focuses on learning opportunities in inpatient and outpatient palliative care and pain management in a large academic medical center with experiences in both acute and chronic care. Optum serves as the secondary clinical practice site, providing exposure to foundational hospice care principles. At both practice sites, caring for palliative and hospice patients is integrated with becoming an expert in pain and symptom management across a wide variety of disease states and disease trajectories. The diversity of educational forums and patient care experiences provides a well-rounded program that can be tailored to fit the interests of the resident and facilitate achievement of professional goals. Program graduates will be well prepared to provide pharmaceutical care for pain, palliative, and hospice patients in both inpatient and outpatient practice settings. Optum Hospice Pharmacy Services Optum is one of the nation’s leaders in hospice pharmacy services. The Optum office is located in Westerville, Ohio approximately 20 minutes from The Ohio State University campus. The pharmacists at Optum utilize patient assessment and medication therapy management (MTM) skills to provide evidence-based clinical consultations to clinicians, patients, and caregivers from hospice and palliative care organizations across the country. At Optum, the resident receives training in the management of a variety of diseases and end-of-life symptoms for hospice patients. The resident will apply his or her knowledge and develop confidence as an independent practitioner through telephone consultations and participation in outpatient and inpatient interdisciplinary teams at local hospice and palliative care sites. Other training may include precepting APPE students, preparing drug information responses, facilitating drug utilization reviews and providing educational programming for hospice and palliative healthcare professionals. The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center The palliative medicine consult service at OSUWMC serves patients with life-limiting illness at variable stages of disease across the institution, including University Hospital, The James Cancer Hospital, and The Ross Heart Hospital. The outpatient palliative clinic serves patients with symptoms related to cancer and cancer therapies. University Hospital (UH) University Hospital (UH) is the flagship hospital with over 900 beds.
