Job Description:
Purpose: The PGY2 pharmacy residency program builds on Doctor of
Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs
to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in
advanced or specialized practice. PGY2 pharmacy residencies provide
residents with opportunities to function independently as
practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated
experience and knowledge incorporating both into the provision of
patient care that improves medication therapy. Residents who
successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency should
possess competencies that qualify them for clinical pharmacist
and/or faculty positions and position them to be eligible for
attainment of board certification in that practice area (when board
certification for the practice area exists). Training Site: The
Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital at The OSUWMC is a 172-bed,
comprehensive, cardiovascular center which specializes in the
multidisciplinary care of patients with cardiovascular diseases.
Each floor is dedicated to a specific service and combines the
latest technology with patient –focused care to create the best
possible healing environment. Key Rotations/Experiences: The PGY2
cardiology residency provides the essential skills needed to be
proficient in providing pharmaceutical care to patients with
various cardiovascular diseases or procedures such as: acute
coronary syndromes, electrophysiology, heart failure, thoracic
transplant, pulmonary hypertension, and cardiothoracic surgery.
Residents will strengthen his/her clinical acumen and communication
skills through completion of at least one rotation in the the
required areas of: acute coronary syndromes/CICU, cardiothoracic
surgery/mechanical circulatory support, electrophysiology, general
cardiology, advanced heart failure, thoracic transplant, and
cardiovascular ambulatory care. Most of the services are teaching
services and may be composed of an attending cardiologist or
cardiovascular intensivist, cardiology/anesthesia/surgery fellow,
and house staff including residents, interns, or advanced practice
providers. Elective rotations are determined based on the
resident’s individual goals and at the discretion of the Director.
Teaching : The PGY2 cardiology resident, under the direction of the
Clinical Specialists, will be responsible for leading educational
topic discussions/journal clubs with the PharmD students and PGY1
residents. The goal is to make the PGY2 cardiology resident
comfortable and confident with his/her knowledge base in an
academic environment. Through these sessions the resident will be
introduced to various teaching styles and encouraged to develop
his/her own style through feedback. During the year, the resident
will be expected to be part of the teaching staff engaged in the
Pharmacy 7470 case workshops at The Ohio State University College
of Pharmacy. Responsibilities include: participating in the
cardiology based case workshops and creating quiz/exam questions.
Research: The PGY2 resident will be partnered with a Clinical
Specialist who will serve as a mentor for their research project.
The resident will be responsible for all aspects of the research
project including: IRB construction and submission, data collection
and analysis, presentation of data, and manuscript writing.
Research projects are presented at The Great Lakes Residency
Conference in April/May. At least one abstract will be submitted
for presentation at a major meeting (ACCP, ASHP, UHC, ACC, HFSA,
SCCM, etc). A manuscript, suitable for publication, will be
composed throughout the year and submitted upon completion.
Speaking experience : In addition to the formal Great Lakes
presentation, the resident will present at least 3 other
presentations to healthcare practioners at the Ohio State
University Wexner Medical Center. This may include pharmacy
continuing education, nursing staff development, or cardiology
conferences. Evaluations : The Cardiology Resident and Preceptors
will fill out evaluations via PharmAcademic at the conclusion of
each learning experience. In addition, the Residency Director will
fill out quarterly and elective evaluations. All evaluations will
be discussed with the resident to determine his/her progression
toward the goals of the residency in accordance with ASHP
standards. The resident will receive a PGY2 Cardiology Residency
Certificate upon completion of these goals determined by the
Preceptors, Residency Director and the Senior Director of Pharmacy.
